Canine back to school blues? Yes, it is a real thing. If the kids went off to college this year, like you, your pet may also be coping with the new found empty-nest. This usually occurs when their daily routine of companionship suddenly changes; so it makes sense if your pet just went from spending the entire Summer with the kids to suddenly being alone the majority of the day.
There are a few things you can do to help ease this transition:
- If the kids are still in the home, try creating a routine that encourages them to interact with the pet first thing in the morning and in the evening when they return from school.
- Get a special toy that is only for times when you will be gone and be sure to hide the toy when you and the children are home so they learn this is a special “alone” play toy.
- If your pet is particularly attached to a specific member of the family, leaving out an article of clothing or a blanket with their scent on it can help easy any separation anxiety during the day (we encourage this with our overnight guests and find this to be very successful.).
- Lastly, if you feel that your pet is not adjusting to the new changes in the home, sending your pet to Doggy Day Care 1-2 days a week could be great option.

We find that doggy day care tends to be some of the most fun and engaging for our guests who experience the “Back to School Blues.” We ensure they get some additional “people time” with the nannies to help them adjust to the change, while also making sure that they have an open environment to participate and play with the rest of the group as they please.
