Heck, we sure do! And we know how good having a small treat mid-afternoon or even in the evening can really be a great boost to the senses helping push us on with the rest of our day. If you have been to the Dogwoods and spent even a moment in our lobby, you know we are fans of sharing those treats with our guests’ owners.

But what about your pet? We agree the treats we share with owners are not good for our guests. But we do believe a healthy dog treat can have the same affects for your pet. Treats can not only be a great pick-me-up after a long day of playing, but treats for dogs can also be a great way to help motivate learning a new behavior or maybe just part of a regular rutine to ease any anxiety a pet may have.

Thus, we go back to the “healthy” part of the dog treat we mention before. While there are a lot of good store bought and local brand dog treats out there, we wanted to share 2 easy, healthy and yummy (for dogs) treat recipies you can make for your pet this fall.

Recipe #1: Martha’s Paw-Print Dog Treats

These are a cute little treat that we believe your pup will truly enjoy!

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all purpose flour, plus more for surface
  • 1/2 cup wheat germ
  • 1/2 cup brewer’s yeast
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 3 tablespoons canola oil
  • 1 1/2 cups homemade or store-bought low-sodium chicken stock

Directions:

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment. Combine flour, wheat germ, brewer’s yeast, and salt in a large bowl. Place canola oil in a large bowl. Add flour mixture to oil in 3 additions, alternating with 1 cup stock; mix until combined.
  • Knead dough on a lightly floured surface for 2 minutes (dough will be sticky). Roll out dough to 1/4-inch thickness. Cut out rounds using a 2-inch fluted cutter. Transfer to baking sheets. Make an indentation toward the bottom of 1 circle using your thumb, then press dough to make an arch of 4 small circles on top of the thumbprint using the tip of your pinky. Repeat with remaining rounds. Freeze for 15 minutes. Bake for 20 minutes, rotating sheets and lightly brushing with remaining 1/2 cup chicken stock halfway through. Turn oven off, and let stand in oven for 40 minutes.

Recipe #2: Pawsome Pumpkins

We like these because they look just like your tradional halloween pumpkin cookies and are sure to make your pet feel right at home during treat time. Of course given the ingredients, they might almost be worth trying too!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup oat flour
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/4 cup peanut butter, organic is best!
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 cup water

Directions

  • Preheat oven tp 325 degrees. Combine dry ingredients into a large mixing bowl. Add the peanut butter and water. Mix the ingredients together until it forms a dough.
  • Then roll the dough into one quarter inch thickness. Cut into any fun Halloween shape, like pumpkins, witches, bats, or ghosts! Bake for 20 minutes on a greased baking sheet until lightly brown.

And there you have it, 2 very delicious and easy to make treat recipes that will have your pups surely barking for more! If you would like to learn more about either of these great recipes you can follow these links: Marthas Paw-Print Dog Treats, Pawsome Pumpkins.
